What a journey this is! When Holly asked me to write the “liner notes” for this compilation, I was intrigued.

How would she make the selection of 200 songs from the hundreds she has sung and written? And where
would the listener be taken?

Imagine my surprise when this collection revealed a hidden side of Holly Near, a singer renowned for articulating a global perspective on social change through the power of song. This is also Holly in her quieter, more reflective moments reminding us of the power of love and strength of connections.

From soaring anthems familiar to singers around the globe to covers of standards and Broadway ballads and her own compositions, in this collection Holly demonstrates the art of interpretation, which she learned from Connie Cox, her first singing teacher. What does the song mean? How does the melody support the emotion of the song? When can diction and phrasing underscore a sentiment? Where is the punchline, the climax, the discovery in each song? And, no small task, what to do with one’s hands! Those lessons provided Holly with the technique and skills that make her performances so engaging and alive with passion.

The songs contained here are not just the work of Holly alone. They also feature Holly’s co-writers — particularly Jeff Langley, contemporaries, fellow vocalists, musicians galore, producers, engineers, and we, the audience.

It has been an inspiration and joy to re-listen to Holly Near’s life work, which has articulated our lives through song. Unafraid to embrace the world and go deep, Holly has indeed been a singer in the storm.
